Is this what relaxing looks like?

I never thought the day would arrive where Dom and I could sit outside, read a book, and watch the children play with friends. I remember thinking I would never read a book again when Rhys was born.

The day-to-day intensity of parenting is easing...six and four is MUCH easier - I of course remember it still, but it is now a sweet memory (well, bittersweet).

The diapers, the cries, the never-ending needing, the care, the feeding, the bathing, the dressing, the playing, the responsibility for 100 percent of their day.  And the L-O-V-E mixed the deepest, bone tiredness and desperateness for a few minutes away.

This is motherhood.

And a reminder for me -- to always help new mothers out.

Claudia's year in the Redbud Room

[Better late than never!]

Claudia's start in the Redbud room last year was a bit bumpy for our intrepid 3-year-old. Rhys had been in the classroom for two years - so I thought it would be an easy transition - but give it new kids and new teachers, and C wasn't having it at first.

But she warmed up after a week or two. Although she was the youngest by 6 months in the class, she loved playing with the girls and the boys and she was sought after to join in both groups.

Pretend play was her favorite but she also enjoyed building and puzzles, and time in the message center.

Her determination was in full force as she adapted and embraced the RedBud Room, while learning to be a good and kind friend. (something that is hard for the Lion in her belly sometimes!)

Unlike her earlier rooms, RedBud didn't require parental volunteers - which was a nice break - but it still was rewarding and special to spend time with her and her friends.

Claudia was frequently asked to help with the puzzles -- even the older kids recognized her abilities!

At the end of the year, she was ready to soar off to her next adventure -- Pre-K!

Dom 2.0

Claudia says Dom is good at mowing the lawn, but not much else. Yes, she is a treat some days.

I disagree.

There's a Lion in My Belly

Claudia has a lion in her belly - or so she says.

And I believe her.

This Lion is wonderful when it comes time for acts of courage -- not so much when it comes time for compromise or rule following.

Favorite part of vacation

After Chicago we made our way 90 minutes up the coast to Harbor Country.  Ahh….Michigan light…not as much to do, but lots of time for family togetherness. And the kids were just the right age. Our last trip was in 2012 (4 and 2) and six and four is a much easier age to travel with. No naps, little cranks - and lots of HARRY POTTER.

So, when asked what their favorite thing about the week was…

Claudia said her horse back ride! Here she is getting ready for her trail ride with Emily.

Rhys - it was the go-kart. Of course. As if you didn't know that already.

And mine…well I loved this….! What a great week for memory making.

Sweet Home Chicago 2014

This year's Chicago visit with the children found us in Evanston - where I spent a rather LONG year in the late '90s. It's still just as lovely and now more age-appropriate!

These days Evanston means my college BFF KT and her family. CHEESE.

We enjoyed life in the urban suburban that is Evanston -- taking the train to the BIG CITY and the Water Taxi and a Bus and a Regular Taxi just so my little city children know what's like to get out of their comfort zone bubble.

While KT and I missed taking a photo together - I hope our next together involves international airfare or at the very least a visit to ol'IU!
